Turbo Decoding for PR4: Parallel Versus Serial Concatenation
نویسندگان
چکیده
Recent work on the application of turbo decoding techniques to partial response class 4 (PR4) channels has focused on parallel concatenation systems that require three APP detectors. A simplified serial concatenation system will be presented that uses as its outer code a single convolutional code and as its inner code the partial response channel. An extension of this serial concatenation system will also be presented that combines a second code with the channel, forming a more powerful inner code. Both proposed systems require only two APP detectors, offering significant savings in complexity and computation time. These serial concatenation systems will be shown to perform as well as the more complicated parallel concatenation systems, offering substantial gains over uncoded systems. Additionally, the effect of precoding will be investigated. Simulation results comparing the parallel and serial concatenation systems will be presented.

Iterative Decoding of Concatenated Codes: A Tutorial
The turbo decoding algorithm of a decade ago constituted a milestone in error-correction coding for digital communications, and has inspired extensions to generalized receiver topologies, including turbo equalization, turbo synchronization, and turbo CDMA, among others. Despite an accrued understanding of iterative decoding over the years, the “turbo principle” remains elusive to master analyti...

Concatenated coding schemes with interleavers consist of a combination of two simple constituent encoders and an interleaver. The parallel concatenation known as “turbo code” has been shown to yield remarkable coding gains close to theoretical limits, yet admitting a relatively simple iterative decoding technique. The recently proposed serial concatenation of interleaved codes may offer perform...
متن کاملTurbo Trellis Coded Modulation with Iterative Decoding for Mobile Satellite Communications
In this paper, analytical bounds on the performance of parallel concatenation of two codes, known as turbo codes, and serial concatenation of two codes over fading channels are obtained. Based on this analysis, design criteria for the selection of component trellis codes for MPSK modulation, and a suitable bit-by-bit iterative decoding structure are proposed. Examples are given for throughput o...
متن کاملImproved upper bounds on the ML decoding error probability of parallel and serial concatenated turbo codes via their ensemble distance spectrum
The ensemble performance of parallel and serial concatenated turbo codes is considered, where the ensemble is generated by a uniform choice of the interleaver and of the component codes taken from the set of time varying recursive systematic convolutional codes. Following the derivation of the input-output weight enumeration functions of the ensembles of random parallel and serial concatenated ...
